What's up Blog?

Been a little lazy in posting recently. I blame the weather.

There was a wind storm last night, the likes of which I'd never seen.

Saturn Press

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic92KygWg39zcI7RDrQLrVTyGe3m8sWjE34LrwTVaF0dITFxugFIGJWOSND92OCyrOHP2GI7xrzD2oWrPdqBhYmZta9ARm71faNjzbNIRHKo1L7jShXsVdXqA0da0PFkal3iN8mpiBojw/s320/MagusBooks.jpg

While perusing through my favorite bookstore in Seattle, Magus Books, recently I discovered a little rack of the most darling cards I'd ever seen. I snapped up two and ran home to discover more.
[2658-lg.jpg]
As it turns out they are made by a company called Saturn Press, located on the remote Swan's Island, Maine. They have no email address nor website. It is sheer and utter perfection that such a sweet letter press would be in a world of its own making.

They reproduce cards and paper ephemera from the 1870s to the 1930s on recycled paper. They are each made individually on hand set presses from the early 1900s.

To get in touch with them write to:

Star Power

I'm not one for movie star worship. But the more I find out about the lovely and talented Michelle Williams, the more I am impressed. You might remember her from that little show some years back, Dawson's Creek? Well since then, she married a mega movie star, had a daughter, dealt with the death of said mega star and made many, many interesting indie and under-the-radar movies. From my perspective, she is one classy lady both in her style and in the way she handles the roller coaster of her life.

Watch these movies and you will recognize the powerful acting abilities of Ms. Williams.

Kitty Daisy & Lewis

http://www.cheekychicago.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/kitty2.jpg

I know, I know. Shocking that I doing more than one post in a day, but I couldn't holding out on this little treasure. Kitty Daisy and Lewis, are a throwback to good old fashioned rockabilly with a touch of swing. They capture nostalgia of the era without being contrived. Scout's honor you will not be disappointed.

Sunday as a Monday

So, instead of spending my Sunday collecting my thoughts and writing, like I really should be, I am, in fact, working. So I will leave you with a little Mary Oliver a la Milla, as an insight as to where I wished I was at the moment.

Sleeping in the Forest

I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

When It Rains It Pours

Today I woke up to this winter's first truly gray day. A tad depressing, because around these parts that normally means we won't really see the sun for any extended period of time for months. So, instead of dwelling, I am giving you some pretty little numbers I've seen recently.

These ladies (and gentleman) certainly know how to dress for fall.

To Do

1. Finish this monster of a book. Its like carrying around several bricks in my purse. But oh so good... Harry Potter for the older, intellectual crowd.

2. Start knitting some gloves for the impending winter. I bought this beautiful black 50's swing coat, but it has princess sleeves (pictures to come soon), so I need to cover up my chilly forearms. I want something along these lines, except a little longer.

Fall Leaves Wristies

3. Start baking at home again. Working at a bakery and being around bread all day, you would think I don't want to even utter that horrid word when I get home. But there is something so comforting and pleasant in baking a loaf on a lazy Sunday. This Sunday, I'm hoping to make some honey whole wheat.

Our House

My new apartment is far from complete. But here are a few pictures of what things look like so far.

Also.... Welcome to autumn! That wildly unpredictable time of year, where things are not always as they seem.

Today I Am Grateful For..

1. Coming home to my honey already making dinner. Fettuccine alfredo, none the less! And mint chocolate chip ice cream for dessert. I'm so spoiled.

2. Having several hours in the mornings to be by myself, drink my tea and futz around the house. I savor these mornings before I have to go to work, like little gems. I am going to start swimming laps at the Y, which is right down the street!

3. My three day weekend that starts tomorrow! Organizing the house, running errands and a quick trip down to Seattle is in store. I can't wait to have tea and chat with my granny and auntie. And to go to really good thrift stores!

Besties

I think I have been spoiled in recent years with a wealth of phenomenal women as good friends. I'm feeling a little blue from the lack of ladies in my life at the moment. I have a hard time making friends, I think.

Pack 'Em Up. Ship 'Em Out!

My posting has dropped off quite a bit recently as I was homeless for a week, while between leases, and while I have been settling into the new abode. The place isn't perfect, but is loaded with quirky, old house charm. Once I set up a desk with a scanner and whatnot, life will be back to normal.

For now, take a peek at the challah french toast I made myself for breakfast this morning. Small pleasures, people. Small pleasures.
