Catch Songcatcher!

Songcatcher is movingly beautiful movie about a woman around the turn of the century who travels to Appalachia, where she hears old English folk ballads. They were maintained and passed down for generations within the tight-knit communities of the mountain people. So the woman decides to collect and records the songs and the story is of her struggles to do so. She falls in love and makes some shocking discoveries about life on the mountain. There are some hokey parts, particularly towards the end. But the best part of this movie is the music. The music and the people singing them will transport you. Watch it. It won't disappoint.

Coeur de Pirate

From the look of her and her name (heart of a pirate), you would expect rock n' roll or least some angry lyrics. But this lady puts out the sweetest French, Fiest-like songs, that melt your heart. I want her to come to Seattle! Rawr! Check out her myspace!

Pretty pictures from Dubrovnik last spring. I love it there. Minus the cruise ship tourists..

On the Run

Follow this link and listen to act one of This American Life. Ira Glass, in his mastery, unwinds the story of a family of eight who, after living relatively isolated on an 140 acre farm in West Virgina spend 7 years on the run from the law. They live in an old boat, not too far from where my parents live in Maryland and a tree house in a the swamps of Florida. Somehow, their unusual childhoods didn't mess them up or make them resent their parents. The children sound relatively normal. And sweet.

And if you have time (because its about 20 minutes long), you should listen to this short story in Act Five of this show, called Numbers. The show is about people trying to put things into numbers, that they just shouldn't. This story is called Break it Down and its about a man who is trying to break down his relationship into how much she cost him, but can't make sense of it.

Summer of Love

The Matriarchs

I have always found the most inspiration and wisdom from the women in my family, particularly my mother, my grandmother and my aunt Melissa, for whom I am named. Their stories, habits, gestures and sayings have shaped my personality. Their courage and strength have carried me. These are the women who I most aspire to be like.

Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds, oh my!

On Friday night, my friends and I saw the Pacific Northwest Ballet perform George Balanchine's Jewels. It was breathtaking. Jewels is an abstract ballet that was inspired by the three golden ages of dance and Balanchine's favorite prima ballerinas. The costumes were the best part. You should go see it -- especially if you are in Seattle. Tickets were only $12.50 if you are under 25.

Like a Virgin

Hello world! I'm Emmy, living and dreaming in Seattle, WA. I am a student at university, studying art history and comparative history of ideas, which are both very conducive to daydreaming. I have been reading some lovely blogs over the last few months and I thought I might start my own. So I hope you enjoy it, whoever you might be!
